Journey from the past to the future

Nelson’s Bus/rail interchange

On 6 December 2008, business leaders and guests took a symbolic journey from the past to the future to open Nelson’s new bus/rail interchange. This is a key part of the town centre's regeneration, funded by Lancashire County Council (£3.5m), Pendle Partnership (£1m), and Pendle Council, who donated the land. The modern, fully glazed building off Railway Street and Broadway provides:

a covered passenger concourse leading to 10 bus stands

disabled access

direct link to the railway station including a new passenger lift

a travel information centre including new rail ticket sales facility

public toilets

electronic passenger information displays

comprehensive CCTV coverage

taxi and car drop off facilities

cycle stands

This is part of an ambitious regeneration programme, endorsed by the Vision Board, to create a framework for a dynamic, competitive and healthy local economy as part of Pennine Lancashire.

Colne precinct

The public area outside Colne’s shopping precinct opposite Dockray Street was treated to a £150,000 facelift in July 2008. The previously run-down area was revived with high-quality landscaping and street lighting, communal seating areas, new-look shop canopies, plus extra short-stay car parking for shoppers.

Prominent sites and buildings in deprived areas

This project will bring back into use prominent sites and buildings which have been neglected but still have a significant life left. Investment in sites, buildings, and infrastructure will provide significant mixed employment creation. It will help to encourage further investment in Nelson and Colne by restoring fading buildings to their former glory and equipping them for up-to-date sustainable use.
